It all started with a phone call during the SARS CoV2 pandemic in 2020. Dr. Cissy Kityo-Mutuluuza had heard about gene therapy for HIV and sickle cell disease and wanted access for Ugandans. After many phone calls and conversations with commercial developers who just kept saying “we need 10-15 more years”, she started researching gene therapy access online.She found a TEDx talk by Dr. Jennifer Adair on YouTube called “Bringing Gene Therapy to the Table”, about a device which could replace existing multimillion dollar brick and mortar clean room infrastructure to enable gene therapies in naïve clinics. Jen shared her frustrations with the limited availability of this equipment in resource constrained settings after commercialization.
